What Is Reactive Attachment Disorder?

Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) is a complex childhood condition characterized by the inability to form healthy emotional attachments with caregivers. Children with RAD have difficulty sharing feelings and socializing with others, and often display aggressive or disruptive behaviors. Though the exact causes aren't fully understood, RAD is most commonly associated with early childhood abuse, neglect, inconsistent caregiving, and other disruptions to secure bonding.

A child can be diagnosed with RAD as early as nine months old, provided symptoms are present before age five. If your daughter has been diagnosed with RAD — or you suspect she may have it — understanding the symptoms is the first step toward getting the right help.

Common Symptoms of RAD

Ego-Driven Behavior

Children with RAD often struggle to understand their own emotions or those of others. They tend to be very egocentric, requiring constant attention and engaging in self-centered activities while ignoring the needs of others.

Does Not Like Rules and Limits

Kids with RAD tend to be defiant, aggressive, and resistant to authority. Following rules or working cooperatively with others is a significant challenge.

Children with RAD often dislike or refuse to spend time with peers their own age. Making and keeping friends is very difficult, and they may prefer to interact with adults or much younger children. Their social interactions are frequently marked by manipulation, dishonesty, and a lack of empathy — not out of malice, but as survival mechanisms developed in response to early trauma.

Build a Support Network

Build a Support Network

Parenting a child with RAD is exhausting, isolating work. Building a strong support network — including therapists who specialize in attachment, parent support groups, and schools experienced with RAD — is essential. You cannot do this alone, and you don't have to. Trailhead Girls Academy was created specifically to support families navigating exactly these challenges.

Our staff understands RAD inside and out. We provide a structured, non-therapeutic environment where girls can practice healthy relationship skills, experience natural consequences, and rebuild their confidence — all while continuing their education.
