Adoption After Age 3: Understanding Reactive Attachment Disorder

Adoption is a beautiful journey that brings joy and fulfillment to families. However, adopting a child after the age of three presents unique challenges. By this age, children have already formed attachments — and many have had traumatic experiences that shape their emotional and psychological development. At Trailhead Girls Academy, we are dedicated to supporting families through this process.

The Challenges of Adopting After Age 3

Adopting a child after three can be more complex than adopting an infant. Older children may have experienced trauma, neglect, or inconsistent caregiving that shapes their ability to form secure attachments. In many cases, adopted children exercise their fight-or-flight instincts against the very family that has chosen them — often targeting the mother figure in particular.

Interestingly, the adoptive parents can become what we call the "nurturing enemy" — the person the child rejects most intensely precisely because closeness feels most threatening. This dynamic can become violent and dangerous, making out-of-home placement a viable and sometimes necessary option for families.

Understanding Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD)

RAD is a condition that can develop in children who have not formed healthy attachments in their early years. It is particularly relevant for children adopted after age three. RAD is characterized by difficulties forming emotional bonds — children may show withdrawn, sad, listless behavior, or may act out aggressively. Recognizing the signs early is key to seeking appropriate support.

Although Trailhead Girls Academy does not diagnose or treat RAD, we have great success supporting girls who have been diagnosed. Our program provides the structure, safety, and consistent boundaries that girls with RAD need to begin building trust.
